(Even If You Haven’t Touched Your Camera in Weeks or Months)

If your camera has spent more time gathering dust than taking photos lately, you’re definitely not alone. Life gets busy, priorities change, and creative hobbies quietly slip into the background. But the beautiful thing about photography is this: you can always come back to it. Your curiosity, eye for detail, and love for storytelling are still there—they just need a gentle nudge.
So if this is the year you want to reconnect with photography, here’s how to make it feel exciting, achievable, and fun again.
1) Start Small and Build Momentum
You don’t need to dive straight into complicated shoots or massive projects. Start with something simple and enjoyable:
Take your camera on a walk
Photograph your everyday world
Give yourself a short, no-pressure shooting session
Little moments lead to big creative shifts. The more often your camera is in your hands, the more natural it becomes again.
2) Relearn How to “See”
Photography changes the way you look at the world, and when you stop shooting, that habit can fade. So practice noticing again:
Light and shadows
Shapes, textures, colours
Tiny overlooked details
Creativity wakes up when you start paying attention to the little things again.
3) Let Go of Perfection!
If you feel rusty, that’s okay. If the settings feel intimidating, that’s okay. If you’re worried you’re “not as good as you used to be,” guess what… completely normal and OK!
Right now, your goal isn’t to be perfect. It’s to reconnect with something that brings you joy.
4) Give Yourself a Little Direction
Sometimes motivation needs a friendly push. A small project, routine photo walks, or learning something new can make a huge difference. You could set yourself a challenge, such as to take one photo every day of things you notice in your daily life. Or schedule an hour in your diary to finally sit down and edit three images from your last photo shoot.
5) Join a workshop
Come & join me on one of My Photography Workshops This Year
Workshops are a brilliant way to kickstart your creativity again—especially when you haven’t been shooting for a while. They give you:
Supportive guidance
Fresh inspiration
Practical learning
A fun, relaxed environment
People who “get” your love for photography
And yes—even if you’ve attended before, I guarantee you’ll still enjoy it! Every workshop presents a variety of opportunities and you'll be with a different bunch of like-minded photography enthusiasts who could also help get your excitement for photography back into gear. Many returning attendees say they learn something completely new each time.
